Keep every draft.

Nobody tells you that a house keeps the shape of the people who leave it. The hallway still turned left for my father.

What’s in the Room
Everything a draft needs.
Nothing it doesn’t.
Every Writing Room opens with the same tools, on the web and in the app.

01 · Write
Type plain text.
It looks finished.
Write in Markdown, the simple plain-text format: a # for a heading, asterisks for italics and bold. The Room formats each line as soon as you move on, and only the line you’re writing shows its marks. You see clean text, not code. Prefer the raw version? Switch to Plain text at any time.
Your word count is always there, on the web and in the app, and the app also shows a page estimate.
02 · Outline
Your structure,
built as you write.
Every heading you write appears in the outline automatically. Click one to jump straight there. For long pieces, that turns scrolling and searching into one click. The outline is on by default, and there’s nothing to set up.
03 · Focus
Twenty minutes.
Nothing else.
Start a writing sprint: pick 10 to 60 minutes, or set your own, and write until the timer ends. It works the same way as the Pomodoro method many writers use to get past the blank page.
On the web, Focus mode takes the Room fullscreen and hides everything but your words.
04 · Versions
Rewrite boldly.
Every draft is still there.
Every save is kept as a version. Cut the scene, rewrite the opening, try the risky ending. If the old version was better, open it, read it, and copy back what you need. No more “final_v3_REAL_final.docx”.
05 · Write together
You pay.
Your co-writers don’t.
Invite up to 15 people into your Room by name, email, link, or QR code. Anyone in the Room can write at any time, and saves merge line by line. If two people change the same line, you choose what stays: Keep theirs, Keep both, or Keep mine.
The people you invite write free for as long as you’re a member. If your membership ends, they can keep writing for 72 hours, so nobody loses work mid-draft.
06 · Your writers’ group, in one place
One group. Every piece.
One link.
A group is a named set of Rooms with one member list and one join link. Add a piece to your group, and everyone in the group can read and write in it, including pieces you add later. For a writers’ group, critique circle, or class, that’s every draft in one place, without sending a single file.
“Anything I add to my writers’ group is shared with them automatically.”
07 · Read it out loud
Hear it
before anyone else does.
Reading your work aloud is the fastest way to find a clumsy sentence. The Prompter scrolls your piece at the speed you set, for rehearsing a speech, recording a podcast or newsletter read, or just hearing how it sounds.
08 · From idea to finished piece
It starts
as an idea.
Every Writing Room begins as an idea you captured: a headline, a premise, a line you couldn’t shake. When it’s worth your time, give it a Room. When you’re ready, share the idea publicly and ask the community a question. The writing itself always stays private.
Save the finished piece as a titled PDF in the app. In the app, AI assists can suggest a next step, help organize the Room, or answer questions about the idea, but only when you ask.
Straight answer
Is it right for your book?
The Writing Room is built for pieces you write and rewrite with other people: articles, essays, short stories, newsletters, speeches, and early drafts. It doesn’t have chapters, manuscript formatting, or Word export yet. If you’re formatting a finished novel manuscript for submission, a dedicated book-writing tool is the better fit for that last step.
Questions writers ask
Before the first draft.
What can I write in a Writing Room?
Anything that’s mostly words: articles, blog posts, newsletters, essays, short stories, speeches, and early drafts of longer work. For screenplays, use a Film Room. It formats scripts and has a table read for actors.
Can more than one person write at the same time?
Yes. Anyone in the Room can write at any time, and saves merge line by line. If two people change the same line, you choose: Keep theirs, Keep both, or Keep mine.
Do my co-writers need to pay?
No. Up to 15 people can join your Room free while you’re a member. Starting Rooms of their own needs their own membership.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. Writing Rooms work on the web, iPhone, and Android with one membership. Focus mode is on the web. PDF export and AI assists are in the app. The newest Room features reach the iPhone app and the web first, and Android with its next update.
Can I get my writing out?
In the app, you can save any piece as a titled PDF. For a copy of everything in your account, email us.
Does it keep old versions?
Yes. Every save is kept, and you can read and copy from any earlier version.
