Why people look for an Evernote alternative
Evernote has been one of the best-known note apps for years, and it's still a capable one. People who go looking for alternatives usually mention one of these:
- The free plan got smaller. Evernote's free plan now allows 50 notes, one notebook, and syncing on one device, according to Evernote's own plan comparison.
- It does more than they use. Document scanning, tasks, calendars, AI tools: great if you need them, clutter if you don't.
- Changes since the acquisition. Bending Spoons acquired Evernote in early 2023, and plans and features have changed since.
- Ideas get buried. In one big archive, a good idea sits between a receipt and a recipe, and never gets looked at again.
That last one is the reason this page exists.
First, be honest about what you used Evernote for
If you used Evernote as a filing cabinet (scanned documents, receipts, web clippings, meeting notes, a searchable archive of everything), you want another full note-taking app. Idea Baby Daycare isn't that. See the list of alternatives at the end of this page.
If you used Evernote as an idea notebook (business ideas, story ideas, things to make someday), then a note-taking app may never have been the right tool. Ideas don't need storage so much as they need a path: capture, pick, develop, build.

What Evernote does better
- Everything that isn't an idea. Documents, PDFs, scans, receipts, clippings from the web, meeting notes.
- Search across a huge archive, including inside attachments.
- Desktop apps and offline notes.
- Years of integrations with other tools.
If that's what you need, stick with Evernote or one of the note apps listed below. Idea Baby Daycare won't replace your filing cabinet.
Where Idea Baby Daycare is different
Ideas are kept apart from everything else
Your ideas live in one place, with nothing else mixed in. Capture one in seconds on your phone or the web, and it's saved privately with a timestamp.
Focus is built in
You can keep up to seven ideas Alive, the ones you're actively working on. The rest nap safely until you're ready. It's the opposite of a notebook with 400 entries you never reread.
Ideas grow into Rooms
When an idea earns your attention, give it a Room. Each Room format opens with tools for that kind of work, and keeps every version as you go. A Film Room, for example, has a screenplay editor, scenes, and a Table Read link for actors.
You can build with people
Invite collaborators into a Room by name, email, link, or QR code. They don't pay while you're a member. Or publish an idea to the community and ask a specific question to get feedback from other makers.
A signed record of every idea
Every capture gets a receipt of its original title and text, with a timestamp and a cryptographic signature. Later edits don't change it.
Can you use both?
Yes, and lots of people should. Keep Evernote (or any note app) for documents and reference material, and use Idea Baby Daycare for ideas you want to do something with. Moving ideas over doesn't have to be all at once. Start with the five you think about most.
Other Evernote alternatives
If you need a full note-taking app instead:
- Apple Notes: free and built in on Apple devices, with good search and scanning
- Google Keep: free, quick notes and lists, works well with other Google apps
- Microsoft OneNote: free, notebook-style, strong for mixed text and handwriting
- Notion: flexible pages and databases, if you enjoy building your own system
- Obsidian: local Markdown files and linked notes, popular with people who want to own their data
How to move your ideas out of Evernote
- Search your notebooks for ideas. Try words like "idea," "maybe," "someday," "what if."
- Pick the ones that still interest you. Be ruthless. If you've forgotten why you saved it, you can let it go.
- Capture each one fresh, in a sentence or two. Rewriting an idea from memory is a good test of whether it's still alive.
- Give your top one a Room and take one step on it this week.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best free alternative to Evernote?
For general note-taking, Apple Notes, Google Keep, and Microsoft OneNote are all free and capable. Which is best depends on your devices and whether you need handwriting, scanning, or simple lists.
Is Evernote still free?
Evernote has a free plan, but it's limited to 50 notes, one notebook, and one synced device, according to Evernote's plan comparison. Paid plans remove those limits.
Who owns Evernote now?
Evernote was acquired by Bending Spoons, an Italian technology company, in early 2023.
Is Idea Baby Daycare a note-taking app?
Not exactly. It's built for ideas specifically: capturing them fast, choosing a few to focus on, and developing them in Rooms with the right tools, alone or with collaborators. For documents, scans, and web clippings, a note-taking app is the better fit.
Can I import my Evernote notes into Idea Baby Daycare?
There's no automatic import. The best approach is to bring over only the ideas you still care about, which is also a good way to find out which ones those are.
